In the Midst

"True faith is being able to say, “It’s a God thing” even in the midst of suffering, difficulty and heartache."

I named my blog "Faith in the Midst" because I wanted to write about having faith when I don't know the outcome, when I'm in the middle of mess, when I can't make sense of what's happening. Prior to this whole journey, I always struggled with people saying "Everything happens for a reason" or "God always has a plan." I couldn't express what specifically bothered me about it or how to express what my theology was, but over time I figured it out.

I don't believe that everything happens for a reason. I don't believe every thing that happens is an intricate detail of God's plan for our lives. I don't believe awful, horrible, painful things like losing someone you love and so many other painful things are ALWAYS for something positive down the road. We live in a fallen, sinful world. Bad things happen. This is not our forever home.

I do believe awful things can happen because we live in an awful place. I also believe that awful things can happen because God has a purpose. I believe that we are simple humans that cannot begin to understand God's purpose and plan for our lives. I believe that it should not be our goal to understand it all, but to live in the moment, embrace what life we have and use it to further the news of His great love. So I am not someone that tries to understand every little thing. I don't believe we're meant to be able to.

Early on in all of this, I caught myself saying many times, "It is what it is." I stopped saying that because I felt it sounded negative but I still stand behind it. Things are out of my control because God is in control. He is in control when it doesn't make sense. He is in control when it does make sense. As his faithful follower, I will continue to follow Him in the midst.
